Learning Without Limits

2022 Horizon

The board recognized our two Horizon Award nominees for this year, SHS Social Studies Teacher William Wehrs and Mathes Early Learning Center Preschool Teacher Lynsey Bledsoe. The KSDE Horizon Award program recognizes exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding. William and Linsey are in their second year with us and will now have the opportunity to be considered as one of the state's 32 Kansas Horizon award winners.

Kate Talley

Elmont Project Lead the Way teacher Kate Talley is one of 59 teachers selected across the U.S. to have earned the 2022-23 Outstanding PLTW Teacher award, which recognizes educators who demonstrate a strong record of delivering an inspiring and empowering student experience, while expanding access to PLTW programs, and transforming teaching.

PLTW is honoring Talley for her work in the PLTW Launch program. Kate is in her fourth year in the district and teaches PLTW courses for students in grades K-12. "Kate’s dedication to the PLTW curriculum is one that comes from her deep passion for each of the STEAM disciplines," said Elmont Principal Joel Wells. "Her students are engaged both inside and outside of her classroom, with an unparalleled passion for their success."

Superintendent Remarks

Mr. Willson reviewed district enrollment trends stating that enrollment is slightly decreasing in elementary and middle schools as seen in the five-year trend while the high school is slightly increasing. Out-of-district remains steady with a slight decrease in the last couple years. Free and reduced percentages have increased due to the state direct certifying more people through Medicaid. The enrollment trend report is one of four reports that will be presented at the next few board meetings and will be incorporated into the district's annual report.

President Remarks

As you may recall, last year Seaman School District was one of only seven school districts in the state of Kansas to receive five Kansans Can Star Recognition awards. Only four districts in the state received more than five awards.

I am excited to share that this year, Seaman Schools received SIX Kansans Can Star Recognition awards! These awards recognize the exceptional work our district has done to reach the state’s vision for education.

On behalf of the Seaman School Board, I am pleased to congratulate Seaman USD 345 for the following recognition for 2022:

• Social-Emotional Growth
• Kindergarten Readiness
• Individual Plan of Study
• Civic Engagement
• Academically Prepared for Graduation
• Postsecondary Effectiveness

This recognition should be celebrated throughout our district. Congratulations to everyone for their exceptional work!
