Elmont Project Lead the Way teacher Kate Talley is one of 59 teachers selected across the U.S. to have earned the 2022-23 Outstanding PLTW Teacher award, which recognizes educators who demonstrate a strong record of delivering an inspiring and empowering student experience, while expanding access to PLTW programs, and transforming teaching.
PLTW is honoring Talley for her work in the PLTW Launch program. Kate is in her fourth year in the district and teaches PLTW courses for students in grades K-12. "Kate’s dedication to the PLTW curriculum is one that comes from her deep passion for each of the STEAM disciplines," said Elmont Principal Joel Wells. "Her students are engaged both inside and outside of her classroom, with an unparalleled passion for their success."
Kate goes well-beyond solely implementing PLTW activities, sponsoring before school STEAM clubs for our Elmont students, where they learn even more about coding and technology tools relevant to their lives and future careers. Last spring, Kate organized an Elmont Family STEAM Night, which was a tremendous success. On this memorable evening, Kate scheduled opportunities for students to showcase personal science, art and engineering projects, get hands-on with their families with Maker Space materials, and participate in a “mobile museum” brought in from Topeka’s Kansas Discovery Center. Kate proposed, organized, and secured funding for this special night, and has been among the most memorable events Elmont has hosted for many years.

This award acknowledges and recognizes their accomplishments in continuing that mission," stated Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW Interim President and CEO. “We congratulate them and are proud of the work these educational leaders do to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond the classroom, no matter what career path they choose.”
